Playscape
Fall 2021
Collabrator: Aanya Arora
Considering the 420,000 children in foster care in the United States the project proposes a new way of living in West End, Providence, evaluating the need to learn and interact of the children in Rhode Island.
Playscape adaptively reuses the existing mill building on the site. The mill is currently built on a grid plan with equally spaced columns inside. The play landscape incorporates a system of curved lines that either obey or resist the existing grid system according to the program. The responsive system of curves dictates the circulation of the space and creates a dynamic child-friendly environment.
Due to the lack of well-designed community spaces and playgrounds in the neighborhood and considering the homeless children in Rhode Island and their need to learn and interact, the design proposes a new way of living in West End, Providence, with children at the focus.
