Cultivating the Commons:
The Countryside of Tomorrow
Fall 2023 Collabrators: Yuxuan Chen, Tiancheng Cai, Jiayi Zhang
GOAL: Organizing people and promoting engagement with other professions, including agriculture, while implementing governmental intervention and fostering sustainability.
In our utopia, the pattern of countrysides and cities are alternating strips of different width. Just like crossing fingers, city and countryside are interlocking, closely related, and actively interacting with each other. Here, agriculture is the bridge that connect cities and countrysides, as green fingers inserting nature and greenery into the cities; and in turn, cities provide working opportunities to the countryside and bring the younger generations back to the dying countryside. What we are focusing on specifically is the “border” condition between the city and the countryside, how does one transitions into one another and visualizing the landscape and infrastructure happening at these edges.
thinking how to spatially stituate the new institution (consuption+production) in an urban scale and how to integrate the different rings within food supply chain

Transportation Diagram
Running perpendicularly across the city/countryside strips is our light rail transportation, which stops every other 4 miles, providing easy access to every city/countryside strip in our future without private vehicles that relies on gasoline. And along the direction of the strip, there’s a slow underground transit system that stops every 0.6 mile at market houses for agricultural goods that we will get to when we take a closer look at the space in between the city and countryside in the next slide.

The public space is set up based on different types of green space, which are chosen to have pocket gardens as part of the transition, also these can be flexible to change the form of utilization.
In our vision, the green is where people bump into each other,,,, where socialization happens…… different uses….possibility of activities
Usage: Time changed and people with different occupations may have transformed in the of use of open space, during seasonal and daytime usage of land use could show another type for transition space. Flexible usage….seasonal,,,,
Public open space can be used as market area (left)
The use of space in the transition area varies according to the occupation of the person (right)
